Spreading Equilibria Under Mildly Singular Potentials: Pancakes Versus Droplets
نویسندگان
چکیده
We study global minimizers of a functional modeling the free energy thin liquid layers over solid substrate under combined effect surface, gravitational, and intermolecular potentials. When latter ones have mild repulsive singularity at short ranges, are compactly supported display microscopic contact angle $\pi/2$. Depending on form potential, macroscopic shape can either be droplet-like or pancake-like, with transition profile between two zero spreading coefficient. These results generalize, complete, give mathematical rigor to de Gennes' formal discussion equilibria. Uniqueness non-uniqueness phenomena also discussed.

Morphological Changes of Small Viscous Droplets under Spreading
– Dynamics of spreading of viscous non volatile fluid droplets on surfaces is modelled using a solid on solid model, which is studied with Monte Carlo simulations. Tendency for dynamical layering and surface attraction are in part embedded into the effective dynamics of the model. This allows a description of the spreading process with a single parameter, which strongly influences the morpholog...
متن کاملThe spreading of macroscopic droplets
2014 Some experimental results on the macroscopic spreading of hanging and sessile drops on smooth surfaces are presented. The results for sessile drops nicely corroborate the main aspects of the spreading theory of de Gennes and Joanny. However, it is shown that one assumption of the theory, namely the retainment of a self-similar shape during spreading, which is approximately true for sessile...
متن کاملConnection Conditions and the Spectral Family under Singular Potentials
To describe a quantum system whose potential is divergent at one point, one must provide proper connection conditions for the wave functions at the singularity. Generalizing the scheme used for point interactions in one dimension, we present a set of connection conditions which are well-defined even if the wave functions and/or their derivatives are divergent at the singularity. Our generalized...
متن کاملDefect modeling in spreading nematic droplets.
Experiments by Poulard and Cazabat [Langmuir 21, 6270 (2005)] on spreading droplets of nematic liquid crystal (NLC) reveal a surprisingly rich variety of behavior, including at least two different emerging length scales resulting from a contact line instability. In earlier work [Cummings, Lin, and Kondic, Phys. Fluids 23, 043102 (2011)] we modified a lubrication model for NLCs due to Ben Amar a...
متن کاملInstabilities in droplets spreading on gels.
We report a novel surface-tension driven instability observed for droplets spreading on a compliant substrate. When a droplet is released on the surface of an agar gel, it forms arms or cracks when the ratio of surface-tension gradient to gel strength is sufficiently large. We explore a range of gel strengths and droplet surface tensions and find that the onset of the instability and the number...
